Saint Joseph, guide me on the path to becoming truly courageous.
Introduction
I come before you with a humble heart, seeking your guidance and support as I begin the journey of fostering true courage within myself. Life often presents us with challenges that can seem overwhelming, and I ask for your wisdom to help me face these obstacles with steadfast strength and confidence.
As I face my fears, whether they arise in my personal life, work, or relationships, I pray for the strength to confront each challenge directly. May I learn to accept discomfort and uncertainty, drawing inspiration from your steadfastness and unwavering faith.
Let your example remind me to stay resolute in my convictions, even when the road ahead seems intimidating. I aim to act bravely in the face of adversity, trusting in the strength that comes from within and guided by your spirit. Help me to not only conquer my fears but to turn them into opportunities for growth, allowing me to emerge stronger and more courageous.
Scripture Reading
“Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt.” (Matthew 2:13)
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid.” (Joshua 1:9)
Reflection
St. Joseph felt compelled to leave everything behind, abandoning the familiar and secure. He gave up his home, a place full of memories and warmth. He walked away from the stability of daily routines and the comfort of predictability. His work, which provided not only support but also a sense of purpose, was left behind. All his carefully laid plans for the future, dreams woven into the fabric of his life, were cast aside in a moment of urgency.
Under the cover of darkness, while the world still slept, he received a command that would change his life forever: "Rise." There were no guarantees offered to him, no promises of safety or comfort amid this upheaval. Yet, without hesitation, he stood up to answer the call.
Bravery, he learned, is not merely the absence of fear. True bravery shows itself in the willingness to obey despite fear, to act in spite of uncertainty. Joseph entered the unfamiliar, navigating through the shadows of the unknown, driven only by his desire to protect what mattered most to him, his family.
His journey was not an easy one. He crossed borders, leaving behind the known for the vast uncertainties that lay ahead. He embraced exile, confronting the hardships of living in a foreign land where everything was unfamiliar and strange. He endured the constant unease that comes with not knowing what the future holds.
This courage did not arise from a sense of strength or confidence but from a deep trust in God’s plan. It was through this trust that Joseph, along with the Holy Family, found solace and safety as they journeyed into Egypt.
In our modern world, bravery often does not appear in obvious or dramatic ways. Instead, it can take more subtle forms, such as:
- Standing for truth in a culture that is often hostile to conviction and integrity.
- Protecting your family from influences that may seek to harm their well-being or values.
- Taking responsibility and admitting when you have failed, rather than deflecting blame onto others.
- Making difficult decisions that prioritise the greater good, even if they may come at a personal cost.
While cowardice often hides behind a shield of excuses, true bravery drives us into action. Joseph's courage was quiet yet firm; he did not voice complaints about the sacrifices he had to make. He carried the burden of his choices with dignity and resolve. A truly brave person does not wait for the perfect moment when they feel completely ready; instead, they respond sincerely when the call for obedience arises.
Reflecting on his journey raises key questions for our lives.
- Where has fear held me back from taking action?
- Am I vigilant in protecting my family spiritually and morally amid the challenges we face?
- Do I shy away from difficult conversations that could foster understanding and healing?
- What brave step is God nudging me to take at this moment?
- Am I seeking bravery for the sake of comfort and ease, or am I willing to be brave for Christ, acting out of faith and a commitment to what is right?
St. John of the Cross and truly becoming Courageous
St. John of the Cross exemplified remarkable courage throughout his life, both in his personal journey and in the profound wisdom conveyed in his writings. His life was marked by significant challenges, including tempestuous political and ecclesiastical climates that often placed him at odds with powerful figures in the Church.
His commitment to a reformed, stricter form of the Carmelite order led to his imprisonment and harsh treatment by fellow religious leaders who opposed his reforms. Despite these trials, he remained steadfast in his faith and mission, demonstrating immense courage in upholding his principles.
St. John of the Cross is perhaps best known for his poetic and theological writings, which explore themes of the soul’s journey towards God and the deep spiritual insights gained through suffering and contemplation. Works such as "The Dark Night of the Soul" and "The Spiritual Canticle" delve into the complexities of the human spirit, emphasising the transformative power of love and the necessity of undergoing trials to achieve spiritual enlightenment.
His teachings continue to inspire countless individuals seeking a deeper understanding of their faith and the courage it takes to traverse the often tumultuous path of spiritual growth.
Practical Ways We Can Emulate St. Joseph and St. John of the Cross
1. Confront One Avoided Responsibility this day: Reflect on any responsibilities or obligations you've been postponing or ignoring. Select one specific task, whether it's an overdue project, a difficult conversation, or addressing a situation that demands your attention, and confront it directly this week. Recognising and facing these responsibilities can promote personal growth and a sense of achievement.
2. Speak Truth Gently but Clearly: When engaging with others, strive to share your thoughts and opinions honestly without causing offence. Use a calm, respectful tone to communicate your message clearly and compassionately. Practice active listening and remain open to dialogue to foster an environment where everyone feels valued and understood.
3. Protect Your Home from Harmful Influences: Assess the environment within your home and identify any negative influences that may be present, whether they are toxic relationships, unhealthy habits, or detrimental media consumption. Take proactive steps to create a more positive atmosphere, such as setting boundaries, fostering open communication, and engaging in activities that uplift and nurture your family.
4. Step into Leadership Where You Have Been Passive: Identify areas in your personal or professional life where you've been hesitant to take charge or initiative. Whether it's at work, in community groups, or within your family, choose to step up and lead by example. Inspire others through your actions, and don’t be afraid to share your ideas and vision to motivate those around you.
5. Pray for Courage Daily: Take a moment each day to pray for the strength and bravery you need to face your challenges. This practice can help centre your thoughts and reinforce your resolve. Whether through formal prayer or quiet reflection, seek guidance and encouragement to act with confidence in your daily life.
6. Bravery Begins with Obedience: Understand that true courage often stems from the willingness to be obedient to values, principles, or divine guidance. Reflect on your commitments and the core beliefs you hold. Embrace the notion that by being faithful to these aspects, you can find the strength to confront difficult situations and make the right choices, even when it’s not easy.
By integrating these practical steps into our lives, we can embody the virtues exemplified by Saint Joseph and become better individuals in our communities and families.
